A Little About Me

Hi, I'm Al.

Little Idea is a small, independent web design business based in Bishop's Stortford.

I make straightforward, good-looking websites for small businesses and people with a good idea who need a bit of help getting it online.

I started Little Idea because I think there's a gap between doing everything yourself and spending thousands of pounds on an agency website. A lot of small businesses just need something in between. That's where I come in.

I've spent more than 25 years working in the games industry, managing creative and technical projects and getting complicated things built and delivered. Now I'm putting some of that experience to work for smaller businesses closer to home.

You deal directly with me. No sales team, no account manager, no corporate machine. Just a conversation, a good idea and a website that does what you need it to do.

The jargon, in plain English.Websites come with a surprising number of strange words. Here's what they actually mean.Show me the jargon +

You don't need to become a web expert to have a website. These are the terms you're most likely to hear when getting one built.

Domain

Your website's address — the bit people type into a browser, such as yourbusiness.co.uk.

Hosting

The online space that stores your website and makes it available to visitors.

SSL

The security certificate that gives your site https:// and encrypts information sent between your website and its visitors.

DNS

The internet's address book. It tells your domain where your website and email services are located.

Business email

An email address using your own domain, such as hello@yourbusiness.co.uk. Simple, professional and easy to remember.

Responsive design

Making sure your website adapts to different screens, so it works properly on phones, tablets and computers.

SEO

Search Engine Optimisation — helping search engines understand your website so the right people can find it.

CMS

A Content Management System. Software such as WordPress that lets you edit website content without writing code.

Favicon

The tiny icon in your browser tab. It's small, but it helps your site look finished and recognisable.

Maintenance

The ongoing care of your website — updates, checks and small changes to keep things working properly.

Integrations

Connecting your website to another service, such as bookings, payments, maps or forms, rather than building everything from scratch.

Staging

A test copy of a website where changes can be checked before they go live. Useful when a site needs bigger updates.
